We tested three ‘cheaps from the old Bloc’ in November 1990… We go back to the 1990s and re-discover which budget Soviet brand was the best Europe was changing. We’d experienced the revolutionary Autumn of Nations in 1989, which began in Poland and soon spread like wildfire behind the Iron Curtain. By the end of that year, democracy had returned to Czechoslovakia. Just a year later, the very linchpin of communism, the Soviet Union, fell apart. And Yugoslavia was soon to follow, violently disintegrating into several Balkan states from 1992. And so, unbeknownst to Autocar’s testers, our November 1990 test…

Delhi-bound flyers may face delays over the next two weeks during peak morning and evening hours, as IGIA’s main runway closure limits arrivals to 32 per hour during easterly winds, fewer than the scheduled landings. To prevent “extra” flights from taking off for Delhi only to hover here due to congestion; report low fuel; divert to nearby alternate airports & then wait there to fly to IGIA, the air traffic flow management (ATFM) system in place when easterlies are blowing asks planes to remain on ground in the origin cities only. Delhi air traffic control’s ATFM unit asks them to…

Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor, Sanjay Malhotra, Friday underscored the risks of dwindling liquidity in the call money market, a situation that could compromise transmission efficiency and prevent the economy from extracting optimal benefits through the current cycle of policy rate reductions. Asymmetries among the call money rate, the market repo rate and TREPS rate are also major concerns, and banks must take a proactive approach, the governor said at the 24th FIMMDA-PDAI Annual Conference in Bali on Friday. “The occasional asymmetries call for more proactive functioning by banks – the entities with sole access to RBI’s…

Easter is a time for chocolate eggs, hot cross buns, and of course, a roast leg of lamb on Sunday or the bank holiday Monday. Not that long ago, home cooks across the land would have been greasing their dishes and turning their ovens on to 180C. But now, lots of amatuer chefs use air fryer for everything from roast chicken to a sponge cake. Legs of lamb are not different. However, for those planning on air frying their juicy lamb legs over the four-day weekend, a culinary expert has a warning. Philips’ in-house Airfryer chef and cooking expert, Martin…

Ultimately, Brinkema found that Google’s anticompetitive acts substantially harmed “Google’s publisher customers, the competitive process, and, ultimately, consumers of information on the open web.” For Google, the ruling likely hits hard, despite a couple of notable wins. For one, Brinkema ruled that the DOJ did not prove Google has a monopoly in a third market “for open-web display advertiser ad networks.” Additionally, Google will not face sanctions for deleting chat histories that could have influenced her decision in the case. “Chat deletions occurred when employees discussed substantive topics at issue in this litigation and continued after the federal government began…

What really sets everyday cars apart, prices aside, is design. The reason one person falls in love with the Jeep Avenger may well be why another orders an Alfa Romeo Junior instead, despite their identical specs. Lancia has always been a design brand and, in this coming era of increasing mechanical and technical similarity, going all in on that appears to be an ideal strategy. “Many people came expressly to ask me to work for Lancia. There was passion in their eyes, and when I told them about the possible plans for the rebirth of this glorious brand, they lit up,” creative chief Jean-Pierre…

New Delhi: The Centre’s move to shield consumers against substandard and cheap imports, especially from China, has had an unintended negative consequence: Supply chain risks for electronics manufacturing and exports. Aluminium, steel, copper and other high-volume base metals come under the ambit of New Delhi’s quality control orders (QCO) covering a large swathe of industries as diverse as automotive and large electrical appliances, which are prone to input-quality risks. But a small percentage of high-precision, expensive metals and polymers covered under quality control orders are also major inputs into electronics manufacturing, and blanket import curbs are posing sourcing challenges, industry…

If you’ve ever found yourself discarding wilted, brown lettuce, you’re not alone. It seems logical to store lettuce in the fridge but without the correct storage methods, this leafy green can quickly become slimy or wilt due to its high moisture content. However, once the packet is opened or the lettuce is cut, it can deteriorate to a soggy, brown state within one or two days, leading to frustrating food waste. Luckily, waste experts at Wheeldon Brothers have shared a storage…

Constructing new cleanroom facilities in older buildings can be a smart and cost-effective solution for applications looking to optimise their existing spaces. Rather than invest in completely new host buildings, it is often possible to intelligently and creatively adapt current facilities, saving both time and money. However, this approach comes with its own set of challenges. Many older buildings have structural limitations that can impact load-bearing capacity, electrical systems, ceiling height and ventilation. Addressing these issues requires careful planning and a flexible design approach. “We do as much as we can to work collaboratively with our clients,” says Guardtech Group…

A cup of coffee in the morning is non-negotiable for many of us. While some of us might be okay with one cup to get us going, others might require a few more. Regardless of how much you drink, if you’re a regular coffee drinker, you probably suffer from the post-caffeine crash, too. Although coffee can initially make us feel more awake and alert, it can also be followed by fatigue. That’s because the caffeine in coffee blocks the adenosine receptors in our brain, which is a neurotransmitter responsible for making us feel more relaxed and sleepy. So when we…

More than three years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Europe’s energy security is fragile. U.S. liquefied natural gas helped to plug the Russian supply gap in Europe during the 2022-2023 energy crisis. Against this backdrop, executives at major EU firms have begun to say what would have been unthinkable a year ago: that importing some Russian gas, including from Russian…

When it comes to comfort food, few things can top a delicious bowl of perfectly crispy roast potatoes. They’ve long been a staple of the beloved Sunday roast, but let’s be honest they make a perfect side dish to almost any meal. The only drawback of cooking roast potatoes is that they typically take at least 40 minutes to cook, but ideally they’re better cooked for over an hour to ensure maximum crispiness – plus you have to factor in around 10 minutes for parboiling before they even hit the oven. The long cooking time can be a frustrating wait…
