“Everyone’s trying to maximize revenue while towing the line on, effectively, fraud,” said Nick Stepro, chief product and technology officer at Arcadia, a company that works with health care organizations on both sides of the divide looking to build the technology. It’s true, he believes, that advanced AI will bring a host of positive impacts to the health system — but perhaps not before it further inflames the feuds over bills between your health plan and your medical provider. “Now, all of a sudden, you have this massive superpower that is generative AI,” he said. “That’s going to let people…

However, in order for these new technologies to play that role, it’s crucial first to understand them in the context of the particulars of these therapies. At its core, cell therapy involves administering live cells to a patient to treat or prevent a disease. This can be as straightforward as replacing damaged cells with healthy ones. Gene therapy, conversely, involves…

As I’ve said before, there are so many new games hitting the App Store each and every week throughout the entire year that if even just one or two of those games are good each week that’s still a whole heck of a lot of great games that pile up by the end of the year. Throw in the subscription services like Apple Arcade and Netflix, and newcomer Crunchyroll, and the quality and quantity…

Paola Manfredi | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Chikankari’s origins remain mysterious, even though the embroidery is synonymous with the city of Lucknow. The delicate (mostly white) embroidery (on mostly white fabric) draws up images of elite Awadh, where garments adorned by noblemen carry with them a sense of prestige. Ethnologist Paola Manfredi would argue however, that the origins of this embroidery are ‘largely conjectural’ or have ‘romanticised narratives’. Paola came to India in the 1980s to work in textile export, and became acquainted with chikankari after working with artisans in Lucknow. Since then, she has documented the history of the…

Signal detection in post-market drug monitoring has changed little in 70 years, but now that shake-up is coming in the form of advanced AI technology combined with democratised access to standardised real-world data. The result will be a rapid and widespread adoption of proactive signal detection. And not just in adverse event monitoring, but also in identifying previously untapped opportunities for drug repurposing, says ArisGlobal’s Elizabeth Smalley. There has been little advancement in the discipline of safety signal detection and analysis since the early 1960s, when the practice was first introduced in response to the high-profile thalidomide tragedy. Systematic monitoring…

The road test has been measuring what we call the ‘door span’ – the width that is occupied when the front doors are fully opened – of its subjects for several years now. Four metres is a big door span: a Rolls-Royce Ghost has a 4040mm door span, and when we measured the current Bentley Continental GTC Convertible’s door span at the beginning of this year (4180mm), we thought we…

Cloud application performance management (cloud APM) is the process of monitoring resources that support software application performance in public cloud, private cloud and hybrid cloud environments. It takes actions to resolve issues and maintain optimal performance. The major goal of cloud APM is the same as traditional APM: helping administrators quickly identify and resolve any issues with a cloud-based application, which impact either the user experience (UX) or back-end functions, such as security and costs. However, traditional APM is meant for on-premises apps and infrastructure, while cloud APM meets the needs of…
